The Summer School for the 4dHeart project took place from June 26th to 28th 2018 at Leica Microsystems CMS GmbH in Mannheim, Germany. In those three days, the students were offered a wide range of workshops on Advanced Imaging techniques as well as other complementary subjects like Intellectual Property and Career Development. Florian Fahrbach, Werner Knebel and Petra Haas, organized the event and guided the students throughout the course. In the first session, all five ESRs had the opportunity to present the progress of their projects in front of the other students as well as the organizers, Prof. Nadia Mercader Huber (Scientific Coordinator), and the 4DHeart project manager, Dr. Lilit Manukyan Vardanyan. Each presentation was followed by questions and a lively discussion, allowing the students to get valuable feedback from people with a different background and environment than at their hosting institution. For the students, it was also useful to get an idea of how the project is developing for the other students and, more importantly, find points in common and define future collaborations. A range of possible synergies was identified such as visiting one another’s lab to test available equipment, sharing samples (e.g. genetically modified fish lines).

The course has comprised a theoretical and practical parts. Theory has covered all aspects of cardiovascular physiology and pathology, including form and function of the cardiovascular system, pathology of the cardiovascular system, repair mechanisms, population studies (genomics, epidemiology and clinical trials) and Frontiers in Cardiovascular Research. The practical workshops of the course has included introduction to a variety of topics like experimental model systems (zebrafish, mouse). High content analysis, bioinformatics and others. The course has taken place at CNIC .

Communication Seminar
Juan Sarasua
Examples of communication based on real science examples, using scientific articles, press releases, media appearances, etc.
How digital media is changing the way science is communicated. How the linear model of communication in science (paper – press release – news media – to the public) has changed nowadays and what kind of tools young scientists can use. Students will see examples of social media used by scientists, journalists, media (general and specialized) and institutions.
Hands-on workshop
Juan Sarasua
Why do you need to communicate? Identifying the audiences, outside and inside the scientific arena. How to develop key messages, define the audience and choose the right tools to target it. What can I use to communicate my research? Identify their content and create a story (video, audio, press release, social media campaign, etc).
Communication Seminar
Juan Sarasua
How to communicate effectively and deal with the media? Explain how does the traditional media work and identify what is important for scientists, for the media and for the audience.
Hands-on workshop
Juan Sarasua
How to behave during a video interview? How to be prepared before discussing with a journalist? ‘Know your enemy’ Develop the right communication strategies for both science (a congress) and general audiences.
